Often called an ‘Aladdins Cave’ Madgetts is bursting with bikes and other cycling goodies .

The business was founded in 1924 by Albert Edward Madgett grandfather of the present owner Mick, but its origins date back to the 19^th century when a family ancestor repaired cycles in his pub yard. Mick’s father Eric moved the shop from a ‘shed’ in the family orchard in Victoria Road to rented premises at Wills Yard in Chapel Street. This was a combined showroom and workshop above a furniture shop – which meant carrying all the cycles upstairs!                                                      

On inheriting the business Mick was able to expand and purchase a more suitable building on Shelfanger Road. This has been further expanded and now houses 4 showrooms of cycles , a separate clothing department, and a fully equipped workshop - The largest cycle shop in the area!

As you see Mick has cycling in his blood – his mother was cycling while she was pregnant with him – you can’t start much earlier than that!!                                 

Both he and his father have had long careers in cycle racing and both been very much involved with the Diss Cycle Club. There isn’t much about cycling he doesn’t know….

Our staff are also all experienced cyclists and always happy to help on technical & physical problems or just best places to cycle in the area!

Also there is a tradition of tricycle riding amongst the staff – all (even the office staff) having been indoctrinated and now owning such steeds. They are much encouraged to try out and master any ‘new’ concept bikes that come our way too – such as recumbents and KMX karts.
